The Brief
Horizon is a fictional sci-fi series imagined for Netflix, set in a solar-powered utopian city. The brief was to design an opening title sequence that would establish the series’ tone and visual identity. The project needed to be immersive, accessible, and rich in visual storytelling. It had to appeal to a global audience, particularly younger generations, and align with Netflix’s high standards for design-led, genre-defining intros. The full sequence was to be delivered in two months, with complete creative direction — from concept to delivery — including 2D/3D animation, branding, VFX, and color grading.
The Solution
The animated sequence illustrates how a solarpunk city survives and thrives in a post-collapse world. The narrative highlights sustainable technologies (such as water filtration, solar energy, and hydroponic farming) to portray an autonomous, resource-efficient ecosystem. The visual approach emphasizes harmony between nature and technology, using warm lighting, soft architectural forms, and HUD-style interfaces (aesthetic codes that resonate with younger, connected audiences). The sequence culminates with the reveal of a city protected by a translucent dome — a clear metaphor for resilience, innovation, and controlled balance. Designed to be immediately readable yet rich in detail, the sequence sets the tone for the series while expressing a strong and hopeful identity.
Generation Z & Millennials
To appeal to Generation Z and Millennials, the series must address themes of ecology and technology. It shows how technological progress led to disaster, and how humanity is now striving to rebuild a sustainable future. Set in a toxic industrial world, the story introduces a solarpunk vision — a realistic yet hopeful future where nature and technology coexist. By exploring the consequences of over-industrialization and the search for sustainable solutions, the project resonates with contemporary concerns and invites reflection on our present and future.
Artistic Direction
The title sequence adopts a non-photorealistic cel-shaded style, designed for clarity and a strong visual identity. Inspired by the visual language of video games and animation, this approach targets an audience familiar with these references: Millennials and Generation Z. The animation combines 3D elements and 2D vector-based interfaces, created in Illustrator and imported into Blender as SVGs. This hybrid technique strengthens the connection between visual storytelling and a technological universe. The art direction is built around a strong contrast between interior and exterior: warm, natural lighting and plant-based tones inside the domes contrast with a desaturated, arid atmosphere outside. This visual treatment reinforces the project’s core message — a fragile balance between preservation and survival.
